Adding new part numbers is "a night and day improvement," which matters when engineering releases new parts for testing and production every day.
New employees learn Business Central quickly, and longtime users finish receiving and counts in less time.
A premier professional motorsports organization with decades of championship history runs far more than a race program. Its business spans manufacturing, engineering, retail, warehousing, and distribution, and much of that work happens internally, with departments supplying parts and services to one another across many budget categories. An aging AX 2012 system was slowing all of it down.
After a difficult first ERP project with a previous partner, the organization's CFO kept hearing the same recommendation from finance leaders at peer organizations: talk to Volt Technologies. Volt implemented Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, built around how the team actually buys, bills, and tracks parts. The result is a faster, more stable system for finance and operations and a foundation that can grow with the business off the track.
The organization was running AX 2012, a system that needed constant maintenance, offered little room for customization, and never earned the trust of its users. The previous partner had treated the business like a retailer, overlooking what makes a race organization different: billing parts and services to multiple internal departments, each with its own budget categories. Requisitions became the sharpest pain point. Staff in the shop and in engineering went out of their way to avoid the system, and some carried paper requisition forms around the building looking for a manager to sign. Every workaround slowed purchasing and weakened confidence in the data.
Volt replaced AX 2012 with Dynamics 365 Business Central and unified processes across the organization's multiple legal entities. The scope covered financials, requisitions, sales, and procurement, with integrations to Shopify and JobBOSS. Before configuring anything, Volt gathered information up front to build what the Operations Manager called "an effective and realistic game plan." The team asked about repetitive daily tasks, worked directly with the people who would use the system, and streamlined data entry wherever it could. Custom extensions, data validation, and hands-on training prepared users for go-live, which happened with minimal disruption to racing operations.
Requisitions went from a major pain point to what the Operations Manager calls "a breeze." Users create them quickly, managers approve them without chasing paperwork, and purchasing gets an instant notification when one is ready to become a purchase order. Receiving against purchase orders for invoice payment is quicker and more foolproof than it was in AX. Cycle counts and year-end inventory run smoothly, and new hires pick up the system fast. With a stable, cloud-based platform, the organization is ready to add business areas or legal entities as it grows.
